This is a first for the Real Music blog… Lauren Oxford music comes under the heading of Filk Music, which, according to Wikipedia “Filk music is a musical culture, genre, and community tied to science fiction, fantasy, and horror fandom”.
Don’t let this put you off though, as the beauty of this particular album totally belies that description.
This eponymous album from this Tennessee based songstress is a masterpiece in gentle Chamber Folk.
All tracks, except for one borrowed from Joan Shelley, were penned by Lauren herself, revealing her inner most thoughts and emotions on an array of personal matters, matters of love, friendship and real World concerns.
She is accompanied by nine women also from the Filk community and all highly talented musicians in their own right. Together they craft enchanting melodies backing Lauren’s ear catching pretty vocals, guitar, banjo and ukulele with harp, violin, cello, bodhran, bass, flute, clarinet and mandolin.
The only shame is that the physical copy of the album isn’t available to buy outside the States, well, not without paying rediculous P&P charges, but for those of you just download music it’s available from the Bandcamp website.
